Just Around the Benz...

The Improbable Journey of Berta Benz is a short animated film based on the true story of a relatively unknown woman (at least here in the US) named Berta Benz. A wife, mother and partner, she was a woman who believed so much in an invention that she defied rules to prove its worth. In doing so, she paved the way for the automobile industry.

Through richly vibrant animation, we tell Berta's story. In August of 1888, Karl Benz had invented the three wheel motor car carriage but was stopped from further development because of society's fear of this new technology. Facing this discouraging environment, Karl Benz's wife, Berta Benz, boldly takes the vehicle and her two sons to go see her mother, who is nearly 100 km away. As the first cross-country road trip in a motorized vehicle, this amazing woman's journey showcased the motorwagen's incredible ability and opened up a world of possibility in travel.

The Improbable Journey of Berta Benz was inspired by the children's book Berta Benz and the Motorwagen, written by Mindy Bingham and illustrated by Itoko Maeno.
